WARM gets the Green Light

Late in May, the first stage of the West Anglia Route Modernisation was completed. This work, carried out between Liverpool Street station and Hackney Downs, has resulted in the complete renewal of the life-expired signalling equipment over this stretch, along with the introduction of the Automatic Route Setting system, where the points and signals over that stretch are now fully under computer control from the Integrated Electronic Control Centre near Liverpool Street.

The work will continue over the next few years, to completely renew the points control and signalling system between Hackney Downs and Stansted Mountfitchet, replacing the current 40 year old equipment.

Furthermore, as the points and signalling equipment are renewed, the capacity of the line will be increased, subject to final agreement for funding from the SRA, with the stretch of track between Broxbourne and Cheshunt being made 3 tracks wide, and between Cheshunt and Tottenham Hale 4 track.

Together with extra platforms at Liverpool Street (possibly in the current site of the Taxi Rank) this could result in a marked increase in service capacity and reliability. The target date for completion of this work is mid 2004.
